When Shimano first released the hugely popular "Technium", they caused waves amongst the angling world as it was different to traditional monofilament lines. Moving forward several years, Shimano released a new version of the Technium line, Technium Invisitec, which stayed true to the Technium brand and design, but bought a low visibility line to the range.
Technium Invisitec is constructed from a triple construction:
- The first is the "hyper resistant core" which is a solid strand of monofilament
- The second is a low memory clear mid-layer which helps to keep the line supple and manageable
- The third is a UV resistant clear outer coating that protects the line from UV damage that can weaken it over time.
These processes together give a line that is highly durable, extremely supple and most of all, gives a high linear and knot strength. Technium Invisitec is also extremely abrasion resistant for its diameter compared to traditional monofilaments.
Shimano has also managed to create a good balance between diameter and the actual true breaking strain of the line itself. The breaking strain of the 0.262mm line in a linear fashion (no knots) was an extremely impressive 12lb 3oz, and with standard knots did not lose much of the breaking strain. With a Palomar Knot the line broke at 11lb 6oz, 4 turn Grinner knot - 11lb 4oz and with a 5 turn Tucked Half Blood Knot we measured 10lb 13oz.
Technium Invisitec is very supple as well and lays on the reel spool flawlessly. The low memory formula gave less retained twist than a traditional more wirey monofilament line.
During use, the casting performance of Technium Invistec is very good and there is very little line noise on the cast as it travels through the rings on the rod. The line does sink once under the surface tension. We would class Technium Invisitec as a neutral buoyancy line that errs towards sinking. When in the water, the line does not stand out like a sore thumb as some lines do, and is virtually indistinguishable when laying on the bottom over weed, clay or gravel. A lot of this is down to the light smoke color that allows the surface it is laying on to show through the line.
All in all, the Shimano Technium Invisitec line is very impressive stuff indeed. It ticks all the boxes that the angler would want it to. It has a multitude of uses from feeder fishing for the match angler through to specimen angling for the largest of species.
