The Bassday Sugapen series has been, for many years, one of the favorite lures for seabass anglers all over the world. The long-awaited small Sugapen version, for light game is here. The notorious Bassday Sugapen lure, which has always had the reputation for being "like a real bait", is being downsized. The Sugapen series is targeting rockfish with the Mebaru 58S model.
The manufacturing of small size lures for Ultra Light Rock Fishing, or LRF is a finesse process, with great room for potential errors in their design. It is widely accepted that the design and production of such lures is a rather difficult task in this industry.
The Mebaru 58S lure will first surprise you with its long casting properties. Regardless of the rod you are using, you will realize that the Bassday Sugapen will reach further than expected. This is due to its aerodynamic design and MZ-19 pure tungsten weight, that makes it pretty easy to cast longer than ever. The body of the Sugapen 5.8mm is slightly bulkier than the medium and large models. Due to the internal bearings and the lighter air resistance, the casting distance is simply impressive for this size.
Basically, just throw it and wind it up, so you can capture the layers at 30 - 50 cm below the surface, by reeling it in, immediately after impact. With a size of 58mm and weight of 5.4g, the casting flight distance is outstanding. The first feature that will impress you is the way the Bassday Sugapen Mebaru sinks, both in Free Fall, or with your line a little tight, producing a slight resistance (Tension Fall). If you hold the line stretched, you will quickly realize that this is a model that is very easy to use, even in the dark, because the feeling is transmitted to your palm.
The Bassday Sugapen 58S is easy to use and has a very stable posture, so it can be a true weapon, even in the hands of a novice angler. More advanced anglers will appreciate its silent nature (to be utilized in calm weather conditions, for spooked fish, or transparent water) and the fact that, despite its size, it cannot pass unnoticed: the round cavity on its back and the way it displaces water create a lot of surface fuss.
Its action is completely easy and lively. Because of its small size, it can easily and instantly respond to any jerk and also maintain its presence for a longer period of time. Hence its chances to attract from the deeper water structures, also increases.
Sugapen can be used as a popper with sudden, short twitches. It will plunge downwards with a jet of water and will immediately resurface. A series if such twitches with in-between pauses is an excellent strategy. It excels, though, in the classic WtD action where Japanese Bassday has shown its true engineering potential even with a lure so small. Alternate a wider or narrower WtD motion depending on the speed of retrieve and the quantity and intensity of your twitches
If you try the Dog Walking retrieve with slight rod action, a unique feature that has been incorporated in this outstanding bait, will come into effect. In particular, there is a hollow point curved on the lure’s tip, which creates a slight splash during Walk the Dog action. Of course it grips a tiny amount of water, without disturbing its action.
Tungsten weights have been placed in the middle front and middle back, allowing the lure to assume a slow, sinking posture.
Bassday has equipped the Sugapen with Fluorine coated treble hooks, with excellent penetrating properties.
In general, it has a superb potential to generate a splash, or a ripple through its wobbling motion with a steady retrieve.
