Major Craft Black Porgy 5G HRF Rods

Major Craft calls it the “Chinning Game”. For that, they have developed the Black Porgy rod series, in which there are models to be mounted with Baitcasting, or Spinning reels.

The technical aspects of these rods, match those of Heavy Rock fishing and Light Spinning rods, targeting the wide family of Seabreams. Major Craft categorizes them as rods with Regular Fast action, however, compared to the respective Heavy Rock fishing rods we are used to in the Mediterranean, the Black Porgy have identifiable differences. However, it is worth stating that it is the Major Craft Black Porgy rods that can accurately target the Mediterranean White Seabream.

The Black Porgy rods have an extra strong blank, that will cast very far, even in headwind, lures and jigs, so easily that you will be amazed. With the slightest twitch, your lure will come to life and execute exactly the intended action. These are common fallacies that other HRF rods have, neglecting the fact that large White Seabreams are vicious fighters that require rods with strong and sturdy blanks.

The 5G rod building technology by Major Craft, has been called into action, for the development of the Black Porgy rods.

The 5G is a manufacturing method, adopting the "R360 Structure". The carbon fiber orientation is arranged toward all axis directions:

• Straight – Vertical
• Side – Horizontal
• Fade - Diagonal Right
• Draw - Diagonal Left

The arrangement of Carbon fibers in all directions, has created an ultra-lightweight blank, that combines power and torque. Unlike the conventional carbon tape reinforcement on the blank’s surface, the blank itself is composed of carbon sheets, laid in the multi-axis directions. It is a blank structure, that can respond to any force applied in a 360 degrees angle, hence it helps the rod’s blank section adopt to the situation. 

For the development of the 5G rods, Major Craft utilized the T1100G carbon sheets by Toray Industries. The T1100G is a nano-level carbon fiber material, that achieves both high strength and high elasticity modulus. It is a latest technology carbon material, used in the field of aerospace or in aircraft applications (such as the tail of planes and floor beams of Boeing 777s), where extreme performance is required. The difference between the T1100G Torayca® material and other composite materials is that when compared (Load vs Strain), they both behave identically until the maximum load, after which the T1100G resin shows a significant increase in energy absorption, offering 13% higher-strength and 10% higher-elasticity.

The arrangement of the guides has been revised from the beginning, in order to maintain the rod’s sensitivity and improve the casting distance. However, there is a new term to learn, when it comes to the Major Craft Black Porgy 5G rods and that is the Fuji Kogyo SIC-S guides.

• The BP5S-782ML is a rod model designed exclusively for “Chinning” that can cover every type of lure, from silicone baits, to jigs, topwater lures, etc. It is a spinning model, with excellent long-distance casting properties, offering excellent bottom sensing.
• The BP5S-782M is a spinning rod model, that emphasizes casting distance, for aiming directly at points with many roots or offshore breaks. In particular, blanks with a highly sensitive design have excellent maneuverability of the lure at the bottom. It will enable the angler to sense the different structures in the bottom, or changes in the flow of water, that can greatly affect your fishing results.
