The International Gelshield 200 is an epoxy barrier system that serves the dual function of the barrier system and antifouling tie coat.
The International Gelshield 200 is an epoxy barrier system that serves the dual function of the barrier system and antifouling tie coat. Once the recommended thickness has been applied it can be over-coated by any of the antifoulings in the International Range.
Gelshield 200 is an epoxy primer with specific formulation characteristics developed to offer easy application by a variety of methods whilst consistently delivering a high level of protection against osmosis. The solvent based epoxy technology delivers extremely good adhesion to the surface and very good tolerance to a wide range of application conditions and temperatures. To augment the barrier properties of the epoxy, layered mica has been incorporated within the formula that creates an interlocking Microplate® effect within each coat, which is highly effective in combating water penetration.
It will also protect metal fittings from corrosion, and so a single product can be applied to hull, sterngear and skin fittings to provide maximum protection to all underwater parts of the vessel. If you are planning to use the Gelshield 200 on metallic surface, note that there are more specialized products for that purpose.
A quick drying, easy to apply, high performance, two-component epoxy for application to sound gelcoats to help protect against osmosis. Gelshield® is provided in two shades (green and grey) to ensure complete coverage.
Gelshield 200 can be applied directly to the gelcoat after the appropriate preparation. Roller, brush or conventional sprays are appropriate application methods, whilst airless spray has the advantage of being able to deliver the greatest coating thickness in each application, reducing the time to complete the project.
Once cured, the full range of antifoulings from International can be applied direct to Gelshield 200 as it functions as an antifouling tie coat as well as a primer. If the application is completed within the overcoating time specified, no sanding is required between coats of Gelshield 200 or subsequent antifouling layers.
It is suitable for use in temperatures down to 5°C. New hulls must be post-cured for a minimum period of 4-weeks before applying Gelshield 200.

Preparation:
- Bare GRP: Wash down with Yacht Line Super Cleaner, rinse with fresh water and allow to dry. Abrade with 180 grade (grit) paper.
Application:
- Before painting, ensure all dust is removed using dust wipes.
- Stir individual components thoroughly, then add curing agent to base, stir and leave for 10 minuets to allow bubbles to disperse.
- Apply a minimum of 6 coats for full protection (Minimum of 250microns dry film thickness per scheme). For ease, alternate the grey and green colours starting with green and ending with grey.
Bilges:
- Apply 2 coats only provided there is a gelcoat on the inside of the hull If no gelcoat, use Gelshield solventless epoxy.
Additional Instructions
- Stir well before use.
- For added protection against moisture absorption and osmosis in bilges, use Gelshield 200.
- If maximum overcoating time is exceeded abrade thoroughly using 180-220 grade paper.
- For maximum performance, temperature should be above 10ºC.
- Applied directly to gelcoat or as a tie coat onto Gelshield solventless epoxy
- Mix ratio is 3:1 (base : curing agent) by volume (as supplied)
- Available in Colors: Grey / Green
- Available in Sizes: 750ml / 2.5 Lt
