Because of their length, long minnows require some skill to cast accurately and easily. If you think any long Minnow can reach far, simply because it is long, think again. Surprisingly it doesn't and unless you do everything correctly, the lure might flap around while in the air'. The most important factor behind unsuccessful casts is the body shake. If the body begins to shake during flight, the negative effect is multiplied due to its length, creating unnecessary air resistance. This will greatly reduce casting distance.

Both the Jackson Athlete 17SSV and 17FSV use a Vortex Generator installed in the lure’s lip, to reduce the influence of Air Vortices that occur around the lip during casting and control body shake. A vortex generator (VG) is an aerodynamic device, consisting of a small vane, usually attached to a lifting surface - such as an aircraft wing - but in this case, it is the lure’s lip. When the body is in motion, relative to the air, the VG creates a vortex which improves the effectiveness of the lip in maintaining the lure’s aerodynamics.

By stabilizing the flight posture, you can consistently make comfortable casts over and over again, rather than just one random throw. In tests that Jackson conducted, the average casting distance increased by 10.3% by installing the Vortex Generator. . In addition, the internal design allows the weight to move smoothly when casting and to hold the weight firmly against the abdomen during action. The center balance position is set slightly forward, to maintain an ideal falling posture, with a slightly forward leaning position.

When it comes to action, the Jackson Athlete 17SSV & 17FSV have a sharp, darting action. With a steady retrieve the lure produces a Wobbling Roll action. When you add Jerking you can also induce a reaction bite by nearby predators.

Jackson has mounted both the Sinking and Floating Athlete lures with reinforced treble hooks. Even for fish that fight in a rolling manner, the hook has a high degree of freedom, making it difficult to disassemble and at the same time improving the hooking rate.
